CRITTERCAM Videos

Crittercam Unplugged... a fun overview of the Crittercam program.

We invent new imaging technology to study animals from their point-of-view.  What's it like to be a blue whale?  Where do monk seals feed?  When do turtles engage in mating behavior?  How do sharks hunt?  Why do penguins dive as deep as they do?  Answering these questions using images (video) helps us understand things we didn't know we didn't know.

Sperm whales:  In this clip I'm working with Clyde Roper (Smithsonian Institution) and Malcolm Clarke (The OutGroup) off the coast of the Azores to deploy Crittercams on Sperm Whales.  In deep water canyons such as those here, these magnificent whales dive hundreds, even thousands, of meters deep to feed on squid (including the Giant Squid, Architeuthis).  We gained incredible new insights into the behavior of sperm whales in abyssal depths... how they communicate, socialize and hunt together underwater... but we never did see the giant squid.  For more information on the technology we developed for this see:
